As co-PI of the iGEM KU Leuven team, I am happy to lead with Vitor B. Pinheiro (Rega Institute, KU Leuven) a talented group of students who are using synthetic biology to tackle real-world challenges through the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition. This global initiative combines scientific research with entrepreneurship, communication, and societal engagement
This year’s project, EMPOWER (Engineering Microbes to Promote Ovarian Wellbeing and Recovery), explores the link between the gut microbiome and PMOS/PCOS. The student team is investigating whether engineered microbes could help address microbiome-related processes associated with the condition.
Led by student co-captains Milica Glusac and Sarah Vanderhoydonck, the team brings together students from diverse disciplines and combines laboratory research with stakeholder engagement and science communication. It is exciting to see their creativity, dedication, and commitment to developing solutions that could make a meaningful impact.
